Greek Life Q&A

Someone asked me to do a Q&A or FAQ post about sororities and Greek life and it sounded like a great idea. I'm going to answer the questions posted from the previous post and if you have any other question(s) that you're curious about, whether it be about Greek life as a whole or my certain sorority, please leave it as a comment and I will address it in a day or two. If by chance, only one or two people ask a question, I will individually email you back.

So here we go!

Q: Do people pay to be in them [sororities]?
A: Yes. There are dues. The amount of money you pay for dues varies by which organization you are apart of.

Q: What do they do?
A: This question is kind of vague, but I'll answer it to the best of my ability. Most Greek life organizations are social organizations. Once a week you attend a chapter meeting, which is basically like a business meeting, and you discuss upcoming events or just talk about general information. My sorority does a weekly dinner on Tuesday nights. Each organization also has a philanthropy and every semester the organization will do some kind of event to help raise money or awareness for their philanthropy. My sorority's nationwide philanthropy is Reading is Fundamental (RIF). There are socials every so often throughout the month that is usually with fraternity and they are always themed.

Q: Can people get kicked out?
A: Yes.

Q: How many stay in all through college?
A: Most people stay in their organization all throughout their time in college.

Q: Are there any obligations/events/benefits after graduation?
A: Once you've graduated, you pay alumna dues to your organization's headquarters. There are alumnae associations all over the country that have similar meetings as we did in college. Sometimes they do various events to kind of hang out and stuff. Joining your local alumnae association is the best route to take.

Q: How does someone choose which one to join? Are they different?
A: Most sororities are similar in the fact that each has chapter meetings, socials, philanthropies, etc. But the group dynamic is always different from sorority to sorority and also from chapter to chapter, depends on where they are geographically, etc. Deciding which one to join is a personal decision. You generally go where you feel most comfortable and were you feel most "at home" typically.
